I have had such a hard time trying to narrow down my photos for the photo book. I haven’t wanted to waste any of my work. If I could have done my book would have had 300 photos not 30… I have ended up with so many beautiful photos of Jess and some pretty comic ones. But no one wants to look at a book that long of the same face unless they know the person the books about.
I am planning to do something with my left over photos I want Jess to be able to have something to look back on. As I never realised how big this project really was until I looked at all the images I still have left over and barely glanced at twice. But I see this really has been such a big project that has taken so much to develop into the final stage that I am now at.
After thinking I had done my final shoot I quickly realised that I had not. The shoot had not turned out how I planned, it just felt like a total disaster to me. I did have work I could use but I didn’t end on a note that I wanted too. So me and Jess decided we would fit another final shoot in!! Much to our amusement to have a final final shoot!
Before hand for some reason I was so nervous about this final part, I have in last few days started to realise that my degree is really coming to an end. So I was sad to see this particular session come to an end. Jess has grown so much in the time I have been shooting her, and we ended on a fun bright shoot in which she looked stunning.
Because of my worry over the shoot I thought it was best to make it as fun and light as possible. This work after all is turning into a celebration of the person we see growing in front of us.
I have used a lot of colour this year with her, but one thing I have not done is include props or gone bright. All the images have been almost voyeuristic in both pose and colour I found. So I though some light was needed to round it all off.
We used various things to get this look in the shoot:
- Coloured gels
- excellent bubble blowing skills
- Not enough blue tac
- And A Jess…
W used a simple set up on of light on the back with a coloured gel on and then a beauty box on her. And because of some worry about printing these later in a good format we used the Nikon D800. I did not want anything to complicated just simple beautiful portrait with some light fun colours.
And I believe I got exactly what I asked for. I think this was a fun shoot to finish on and has wrapped up the work for Jess. She has done her part now in this project and now I need to bring it all together to finish this project for her.
This Interim exhibition presented some problems. After meeting with my tutor only a couple of hours before and changing my project slightly. So I printed out a collection of photos I liked. So I played with the idea of a standard studio image a home based one and an idealistic image. From my exhibition I have realised I need to think about my statement and title.
My statement was a rushed one as I wasn’t sure what I wanted to say after realising my project had changed a little. So I know that I want to work out a proper statement with Jess, this project after all is a collaboration between the two of us. And I want that to show in many aspects of the work.
I did get some good feedback on this piece, it was really liked by quiet a few. Talking about the work in class however did raise a few problems to my attention. The third print we can see that does not fit the full frame will be a challenge. I did not think about the size I cropped it down to when I was editing. So for that reason I need to go back and resize it and then check it to size in A1. So I need to think about test prints in bigger sizes to make sure I don’t lose quality.
Another thing to consider is paper type and layout. So in the coming weeks I have a trial and error process to work through to find out what paper types and format will work for my final exhibition. So my next thing is resizing and paper types to consider…
This work looks at the behind the scenes at all varieties of pageants, he has collected work from all around to create this book. It is almost his the good, the bad and the ugly. He shows us the world we hear so much about but don’t really see as much as we think we do. From the tears to the backstage horrors.
He shows us the world of vanity and backwards morals an opinions. But leads it into the alternative pageants, the best lady boy or drag queen!
So focusing on the whole book and looking at every one’s different definitions of idealistic beauty, he shows how everyone’s ideals are different from others. He wanted a well rounded view on this world of glam and glitz in all it’s forms.
We live in a world that is based on who looks best, and pageants are an extension of that. He has captured this idea of beauty in it’s most exaggerated form and how women strive to be Miss Universe for example. But why is it we only ever pay attention to the big end pageants, why do all the others get so ignored. And he shows all sides of it he doesn’t want any of them going unnoticed.
Looking into travelling performers, this book has it all. From different cultures to different generations. He doesn’t just document one type he wants to show all aspects of their lives. The side we never see.
He uses a simple set up in his photo book, with both black and white images and colour. He doesn’t bleed his images across the whole page, but likes to show as much of them and lets them fill as much as the page with simple titles that tell us who is in the image or where they are.
His work shows the real life side that we never consider. There is no stereotypical images that cloud your judgement, if you didn’t read his description at the start it would take you a while to understand what you were looking at. I find that could be a good tactic there is so much surrounding this that people judge and categorise the people living that life. Which takes away the focus from the work so leaving it minimalist means they look at the raw work not filled with description.
This guy has gone and photographed the youth of an Irish town, he has mixed both portraits and spontaneous encounters and collaborative performances. His photo book is simple and to the point.
He has found a stereotypical council estate style town. That has fallen down and the youth seem to be caught up in this. He mainly looks at the kids- adolescents they seem to mimic a trend that follows on from their parents, with a very 90’s vibe to both the style and location.
He has been selective in what he shows, but not selective in how he shoots. He talks about his spontaneous encounters and to me this makes the work better. He has captured them in the most natural way, he hasn’t forced the encounter or for them to perform for the camera. Even his collaborative work they have chosen how they want to be photographed it is their decision so not a forced performance they are giving him.
After my recent tutorial my project has been thrown out. And now am left confused as to what my project is really about now. My tutor after seeing my work for many months and knowing what it is about decided he did not like what the work was about anymore.
The idea of who she was, who she wants to be and who she really is now isn’t the basis for the work. But rather now I am to play with the ideas of too many photos of Jess like capturing her in every way. Or break it down into images she both likes and hates and then ones I like and hate. Which to me is going to get repetitive as we have very similar taste in the images.
So going to my second tutorial with my other tutor I spoke about the problems I was having. And had narrowed down my Images with approximately 5 images from shoots I have done so far. This brought my images down to 64.. Not the ideal amount. And then to be told to get rid of half of them again.
To me I feel like I am wasting my images, which I know isn’t the case as even I would not want to look at a 400 page edit. That would be mad, I just realise I have to be critical and get rid of images that won’t help me in anyway. Just because I like the image does not mean it will fit into the sequence.
I looked at this photographer as his work isn’t that well known but he has created some interesting portraits all in a very abstract way. They are quite surreal and have the look of work done by Salvador Dali in his paintings and photographs. He has distorted the body so it looks fake and like a mannequin.
I wanted to look at this photographer to see how people distort the body and represent it in many different ways. Although I haven’t done any work to match this I found it interesting to look into. He has clever use of color in comparison the the black and white which makes his images so much more bold and interesting to look at.
It has a retro sort of feel to it, with the pin-up girl style to the female models. Like the image of all the heads, it creates the idea that all women are the same. And detachable but it relates to the work that women are a kept commodity. He makes the women look plastic and false.

I like her interesting use of empty spaces. I feel this was clearly a room post exhibition or decorating. It makes you wonder why it has been left in this way. If it is intentional or just how she discovered the room and wanted to use it as is. The images also have an eerie quality to them the abandonment vibe to them.
I looked at her work as like me she has work on empty places that create their own story like some of my images have tried to do. She keeps all her images very light and open. She doesn’t create the feeling of confinement, again her images are very clinical with very minimal harsh colors.
This photographer is also a painter, her work oil painting work is that good I struggled to tell the difference between the painting and the photograph. I like her work with water, water can be used and manipulated in so many different ways. It creates a abstract look to the work, and again makes it clinical because of the things we associate water with.
I like how she looks at both paintings and photographs and can make them almost appear as one because of the skill she has. The use of tones she has used make the body stand out so much more and by surrounding them by water almost frames them. But also distorts the body.
I have enjoyed looking at her work as it shows how you can make paintings and photography go hand in hand. She has studied the way water moves around her subject and taken influence from her photographs and used it t create unique and abstract water-portraits.
